Optimization of thermostable alkaline protease production from species of Bacillus using rice bran

    Get PDF
A protease producing microorganism was isolated from soil collected from a detergent industry and identified as Bacillus species. Isolate K-30 produced thermostable alkaline protease utilizing rice bran. The optimum conditions for protease activity was 55°C at pH 9 with 4% inoculum in the medium containing 1% rice bran after 96 h of incubation. Beef extract, tryptone and yeast extract were good nitrogen sources while lactose, starch, and sucrose were suitable for enzyme production. The extracellular production of the enzyme, its thermostable nature and compatibility with most commercial detergents are features which suggest its application in the detergent industry.African Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 4 (7), pp. 724-726, 200

An ethnomedicinal study was carried out on the tribals of Kotia Hills of Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, to document the plants used in various ailments. A total of 62 plant species belonging to 41 families were recorded. Majority of the plant species described in the present paper was used in the snakebite, diarrhoea, rheumatoid arthritis, bone fracture, asthma and malaria. Most of the herbal remedies were taken externally in the form of paste. All these plants and plant parts need to be evaluated through phyto and pharmacochemical investigations to discover their potentiality as drugs. There is an urgent need to explore and document the ethnomedicinal plants used by the tribals of Kotia Hills before such valuable knowledge vanishes.Key words: Ethnomedicine, Ethnomedicinal plants, Kotia Hills tribes, Vizianagaram district N. Get PDF
The present paper reports the distribution of finger ridge count correlations among four tribal populations from Andhra Pradesh, India viz., Dulia, Kotia, Manne Dora and Manzai Mali, and examines the intra and inter population variation. Higher correlations are recorded in left hands compared to right hands, but they are not significant. The homologous fingers exhibit a stronger correlation. In all the tribes, the correlations between right hand fingers are relatively higher among women when compared to men. Regarding inter population variation Dulia men differ significantly from the men of Manne Dora and the Manzai Mali tribes, and Kotia women also differ from the women of the Manne Dora significantly. The average correlation coefficient of the present populations is similar to other Indian populations reported earlier but lower than African and European populations

Background: Medical education has been asserted as one of the most challenging, demanding, and stressful fields of study, as medical students are expected to acquire diverse competencies such as academic, clinical, and interpersonal skills. Pharmacology is rapidly evolving and expanding conquering many diseases in its stride. The survey-based study we aim to grasp the MBBS students’ opinion regarding the teaching practices in pharmacology. Aim was to Study and compare the Effectiveness of Computer Based Teaching Versus Conventional Teaching Perception About Pharmacology Among Second Year MBBS Undergraduate Medical Students. Methods: A comparative study was conducted at Department of Pharmacology, Maharajah’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Nellimarla, Vizianagaram, Andhrapradesh. Two hundred second year MBBS medical students (n = 200) were divided into two groups. Results: In this study results shows P value and statistical significance the two-tailed P value is less than 0.0001 by conventional criteria, this difference is considered to be extremely statistically significant. Confidence interval the mean of Pre-test score minus Post test score equals -3.1900 and 95% confidence interval of this difference from -3.4503 to -2.9297.Conclusions: The importance of pharmacology in clinical decision making is well understood by the majority of students and they aim to act in that behest. Also, we find that computer based learning is a new and important tool coming up in the arsenal of the pharmacology teacher

Diagnostic Applications of Ultrasonography to Testes and Accessory Sex Glands in Ongole (Bos indicus) Bulls

    Get PDF
Ultrasonography was performed on Ongole breeding bulls to evaluate the testes, epididymis, pampiniform plexus, ampulla and seminal vesicles as a part of breeding soundness examination and the findings were recorded. Trans-scrotal ultrasonography of the testis in longitudinal plane showed moderate echogenicity of the testicular parenchyma, while the mediastinum appeared as a high echogenic line in the middle and showed different hyperechogenic testicular tunics. The pampiniform plexus of the testis was revealed as a network of anechoic vascular lumen and hyperechoic vascular coiling giving a spotted appearance. The tail of the epididymis was recorded in the oblique plane near the distal pole of the testis as a less echogenic structure that was differentiated from the testicular parenchyma as a triangular area separated by a non-echogenic line. The prostrate body was a hyperechoic area located dorsal to the neck of the bladder. The ampullae which are located on the neck of the bladder appeared as two dorsal lines with non-echogenic linear lumen, while the glandular lining appeared as moderately echogenic line followed by hyperechogenic muscular wall. Seminal vesicles were examined lateral to the ampulla, above the neck of the bladder which appeared as irregular shaped isoechoic lobes of glandular tissue separated by hypoechoic regions. It is concluded that ultrasonography is a noninvasive technique that does not involve risk to the reproductive potential of the bull and helps to further characterize pathologies of the male reproductive tract by specifying the localization and nature of tissue changes associated with anomalies

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) and Hypertension (HTN) are the two major chronic disorders frequently coexisting, with increased incidence with age. HTN is about twice as common in patients with DM. Prescribing pattern are powerful tools to ascertain the role of drugs in society. There are many variations in prescribing patterns of antihypertensive drugs in patients with HTN and DM. Since these patients requires lifelong treatment it has enormously increased the burden of patients particularly in developing countries like India. Physician needs to be more concerned while choosing drugs for the patients with HTN and DM. In a tertiary care hospital, there is a real need for drug utilization study to determine the appropriate, more safe and effective patterns of drug therapy among diabetic hypertensive patients. Methods: A Cross sectional observational study was conducted in Maharajah’s Institute of Medical Sciences from December 2016 to May 2018. A total of 360 prescriptions of the patients with hypertension and coexisting diabetes were analyzed. The prescriptions prescribed to these patients were collected, assessed and the following parameters were noted. The treatment pattern of different group of drugs for HTN with co-existing DM was evaluated. The intended work was divided into three steps: Step 1: To collect the prescriptions of hypertensive patients with DM. Step 2: To separate the prescriptions prescribing anti hypertensive Drugs. Step 3: To statistically analyze the prescriptions. Relevant information was recorded in a structured proforma & data was evaluated. Results: In this study it was found that 36% of the patients were in the age group of 51-60 years with female preponderance among diabetic hypertensive patients. 77% of patients were treated with single antihypertensive drug and 23% of patients were treated with antihypertensive drug combinations. In monotherapy, telmisartan was most commonly prescribed. In combination therapy, amlodipine and telmisartan followed by amlodipine and atenolol were used. Conclusions: In this study monotherapy was preferred compared to combination therapy and adherence to the JNC 7 guidelines was good except in case of usage of diuretics
